What is Lycopene?
Lycopene is a lipid-soluble carotenoid pigment responsible for the bright red colour of tomatoes, grapefruits and watermelons, among other fruits and vegetables. It is one of the main reasons tomatoes and tomato products have been so widely studied.
What does the research say about Lycopene?
Lycopene has notable antioxidant activity, and its antioxidant properties have been reviewed in detail. Epidemiological studies have looked at dietary lycopene in relation to heart health.
'Oxidative stress' describes an imbalance between free radicals (unstable molecules) and the body's antioxidant defences. It is a major area of ageing research, and ageing is a big focus of fruit and vegetable research in general, including the role of fruits in ageing. Researchers have also reviewed lycopene's effects on markers of ageing.
Lycopene has also been studied in relation to the prostate, including lycopene levels in prostate tissue and observational studies of tomato and lycopene intake.
