What is Phytosterol Complex?

Phytosterols, divided into plant stanols and plant sterols, are a group of compounds that are found naturally in plants. They're exciting for nutritionists because they are structurally similar to cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a type of blood fat. Our bodies need some cholesterol, for example to build cell membranes and make hormones, and it is carried around the body in the blood.

What does Phytosterol Complex do?

Plant sterols contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Phytosterols work in the gut, where their similar structure limits how much cholesterol from food is absorbed. Their effect on LDL cholesterol has been studied in a meta-analysis of randomised controlled studies across different dose ranges, and researchers have reviewed their role in blood cholesterol and heart health.
