What is Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) Powder?
It's a bit of a mouthful and not as talked about as some other nutrients, but Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) is something you should definitely know about, especially if you're interested in your hair and skin.
MSM is a natural source of sulphur. Sulphur is found in every cell in the body, including hair. It is part of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, and cysteine is a building block of keratin, the main structural protein in hair and nails. 'Sulphur bonds' between keratin strands help give hair its strength and flexibility.
What does the research say about MSM?
MSM is one of the more studied sources of sulphur in relation to hair. A study has looked at a sulphur-containing supplement and hair and nail condition.
Keratin is also a structural component of our skin. Researchers have studied MSM taken by mouth for its effects on visible signs of skin ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles. A skin preparation combining MSM with silymarin, from milk thistle, has also been studied.
