What is Maca Root Extract?

Maca is a hardy plant native to the high Andes in South America and has only come to the attention of Western science relatively recently. It has a long history of use in traditional Andean practice, including by women around the menopause, and in Peru it has a traditional reputation linked to fertility. Maca is sometimes called 'Peruvian ginseng', despite not being related to the ginseng family.

What does the research say about Maca Root Extract?

Extracts of the root of the Maca plant have been studied in relation to hormonal balance, stamina and feelings of vitality. A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study in early-postmenopausal women looked at its effects on hormone levels. A pilot study in perimenopausal women looked at physiological and psychological measures, and another pilot study in postmenopausal women looked at blood pressure and mood.

A study in healthy men looked at its effect on sexual desire and found no link with testosterone levels. A study in postmenopausal women looked at psychological wellbeing and sexual function, and reported that its effects were not related to the oestrogen or androgen content of the maca.
